The entire second section of the book of Exodus is given over to God’s simple revelation of the Results of Redemption in the lives of those who embrace His Redeemer.
Chapter 13:17-22 identifies that as a result of embracing God’s redemptive provision by faith God’s people will always have “plain path leadership.”[1] When the cloud/pillar of fire moved, they moved. When the cloud/pillar of fire remained, they remained. This result of redemption is not some kind of discernment provided only to an elite few. It is available to every genuine believer.
Chapter 14 reveals that Salvation (deliverance) is a result of redemption. Those who are truly redeemed by the blood of the God-ordained Redeemer are also being delivered (saved) more and more all the time.
Chapter 15 reveals that when He redeems His people, God puts into their hearts a joyful song. At the roots of this great song in this chapter we encounter the characteristics of all true God-honoring music.
Chapter 16 through 17:7 reveals that as a result of redemption God’s people learn to depend upon God to meet their needs in a supernatural manner. It leads them into an entirely new way of looking at life and its necessities.
Chapter 17:8-16 reveals that a result of redemption in the lives of God’s true people is supernatural victory over God’s enemies. God literally makes the sun to stand still in the sky in order to bring complete victory over the Amalekites.
Chapter 18 reveals God’s provision of wisdom dealing with all Israel. All wisdom is God’s wisdom. He can either enable a leader to partake directly of His wisdom, or provide others whom He will use to impart His wisdom as well.
Chapters 19-24 reveal that obedience to God’s truth is a result of redemption. These chapters give us the Ten Commandments and the details of the moral law. We must never forget that the primary revelation in the Law is the perfect righteousness of God, and that the purpose of the law is to reveal sin, not to remedy sin.
Chapters 25-31 & 35-40 reveal that true worship is a result of redemption. Worship is not a duty to be fulfilled by religious people. Worship is the deep heart response of those who are redeemed by the blood of God’s Redeemer. Worship is a way of life, not a series of spiritual responsibilities.
Chapters 32-34 reveal that amazing, glorious separation is a product of redemption as well. It is because God literally “goes with” His people that they are separated by His presence among them from everyone else on earth.
By the time a person has adequately studied God’s revelation of truth in the book of Exodus he/she should be far more settled in a life of faith than was previously true. God sees the deep need every son/daughter of Adam has to be redeemed, meets that terrible need through the blood of a God-ordained Redeemer, then proceeds to lead him/her into a life characterized by supernatural guidance, staggering joy, constant deliverance, divine provision of all needs, victory, worship, wisdom, delighted obedience...such a life as is not the reality for the unredeemed. This miraculous new quality of life for the redeemed sets them entirely apart from all others on the earth. And this is the distinctive redemptive revelation in Exodus.
[1] This is where I felt the need to modify Mr. Sells’ outline. He had chapter 14 included with the Story of Redemption, labeling it “Redemption by Power.” I see it as Salvation, which is a direct result of Redemption, and not a form of Redemption. For more on this see Appendix A.
